To his credit, one of the winningest coaches ever, John Wooden, never made his UCLA basketball dynasty out to be anything more than it was—a collection of wonderfully talented athletes who played superbly as a unit due to their willingness to sacrifice individual acclaim for the ultimate success of the team. In his book Wooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections On and Off the Court (1997), the coach shared these thoughts on the topic: “Long before any championships were won at UCLA, I came to understand that losing is only temporary and not all-encompassing . . . I’ve also learned that winning games, titles, and championships isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and that getting there, the journey is a lot more than it’s cracked up to be.” Success to Wooden was found in achieving peace of mind, which is a direct result of knowing that you did your best to be the best you could possibly be.

I have yet to listen to this but sounds interesting.
Whether it’s football season, baseball season, or basketball season, one thing is constant: a good chunk of the population has sports on the brain. On today’s episode of Distillations we explore why this is the case. First producer Lindsay Patterson follows a high school basketball team to learn about the role chemistry plays in winning a big game. Then we check in with the fans at home, learning what happens in your brain when you’re cheering on your favorite team.

These vids bring back some memories. My life would revolve around ABC sports on the weekends. A lot of times it was hit or miss whether or not they would show any cycling. It was a chance well worth it, though. VCR loaded and ready to hit record right on the dot. Then I would watch them over the winter. When the programming was longer, such as during the Tour de France, when I watched these tapes I could never get through a stage in one sitting. I would always fall asleep. They were very relaxing to me. That’s how much I enjoyed watching them. I still have these tapes in a box. Memories.

There’s a lot of info available at your fingertips to learn a little bit about anatomy and physiology such as on Coach Brian Mac’s webiste
From Khan Academy there are some good anatomy and physiology videos. Start with the following and proceed through to the end of the biology list.
Over on itunes you can listen to Dr. Andy Doyle’s lecture series Physiology of Exercise. It’s a 200 level course so an understanding of anatomy and physiology would help (focuses on alterations in body systems and organs during physical activity with emphasis on metabolic, cardio respiratory, and body composition parameters).
The internet is so cool. Such a learning tool. I wish I had this when I was in school especially the videos. I’m much more of visual type of learner.

Over 3 hours of pure blissful viewing pleasure. This one looks like a good one.
Every day there are news reports of new health advice, but how can you know if they’re right? Doctor and epidemiologist Ben Goldacre shows us, at high speed, the ways evidence can be distorted, from the blindingly obvious nutrition claims to the very subtle tricks of the pharmaceutical industry.
I have yet to watch this.
