The KAATSU-Master Training System

Testing New Exercise Technique

A new type of weight training that is being developed through a partnership with American College of Sports Medicine and Sato Sports Plaza of Japan. This technique could reduce the stress on athletes and older adults whom have a limit on physical stress that can be applied to the body, such as joint problems.

This technique allows for a reduction of the external loads that need to be lifted from a traditional high load of 80 percent of a person’s strength down to 20 percent while maintaining all the benefits of the high-intensity programs.

Personal Winter Coaching Goals

I got a couple of strength training books the other day. “Weight Training For Cyclist” by Doyle and Schmitz and “Explosive Lifting For Sports” by Harvey Newton. My goal for this winter is to become more knowledgeable on weight training. I also plan on taking the Resistance Training Specialist course from the National Federation of Professional Trainers from whom I have my personal trainer certificate. All this to better serve the athletes that I train. Oh yea, and to fulfill my CEU’s with NFPT and USACycling.

Recent Discoveries Applying to Fitness

In the recent Journal of Applied Physiology, it has been found that muscle acts as an endocrine organ.  The endocrine system is a system of glands that involve the release of extracellular signaling molecules known as hormones. The endocrine system is instrumental in regulating metabolism, growth, development, puberty, tissue function, internal environment (temperature, water balance, ions) and also plays a part in determining mood. Especially interesting is that muscle releases interleukin 6 which is a pro and anti inflammatory substance. This  contributes to our understanding of why regular exercise protects against a wide range of chronic diseases.

Also of interest in the Journal of Applied Physiology is the finding that sulforaphanes, found in cruciferous vegetables, acts as an indirect antioxidant in skeletal muscle and could play a critical role in the modulation of the muscle redox environment, leading to the prevention of exhaustive exercise-induced muscle damage.

2009 Senior Olympics

Did you know Nancy Brown is attending the Senior Olympics in San Fransisco today, 8/10? Congratulate her on her accomplishments when she gets back.  She’s been working with me, using a power meter, and is doing great. The power meter came from Cycleops in which she had entered a contest (click here for her training progress)

Sydney Brown: Masters National Champion

Sydney Brown of the Mercy Cycling women’s team, and Rightway Personal Training athlete, scored a Masters Championship time trial win in the age bracket of 40-44.  She rode the 15 mile course in 00:34:26.10  on a Specialized Transition time trial bike from JoyRide Bicycles of Lincoln, Ne.  She might of  even had a  podium placing in the women’s french TT championships or maybe even in  Italy ?

50-year-old Jeannie Longo won her 56th French national championship by successfully defending her time trial title. She covered the 23.5-km (14.8-mile) course in 33:42 – an average speed of 41.7 kph (26.3 mph) — to win by 33 seconds. Longo took her first national title 30 years ago before many of her current rivals were born. A late report says Longo will be in the U.S. this weekend to race in the 50th edition of the Fitchburg Longsjo Classic, July 2-5 in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. ( taken from Road Bike Review )

Running Faster On High-Grade Oil: Mouse Study

The research, presented on 29th June 2009 at the Society for Experimental Biology Annual Meeting, has shown that mice fed for two weeks on a diet high in sunflower oil, which contains n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, ran on average 0.19m/s faster than mice fed a diet rich in linseed oil, which is high in n-3 fatty acids

Just when you think we possibly can not break that last world record, in a speed sport, there’s new research that says we have the capability. I wonder how fast we can go?

Constant Power Article

A really good article, from Cycleops, on the importance of doing level 2-3 rides at a steady power level. These are the rides that are predominately endurance/ low tempo rides.
