New Joule & Other CycleOps Products

DC Rainmaker: First look at the new CycleOps Joule and Joule GPS, PowerTap hubs, PowerCal, and VR software.

It still seems like the size of the numbers on the new Joule are small and hard to read. Also, I wondering if they changed the lighting/ background contrast any. What might of been part of the problem with the lighting is the LCD screen was recessed. Lastly, the old Joule 2.0 you would have to adjust the lighting manually when it got dark.

GPS, from a clients standpoint, seems to not be all that practical. From a coaches standpoint, there is some practicality.

I can’t wait to see and test one of these out. Personally, I like the Garmin’s for all the reasons that the Joule is not. GPS isn’t a factor in my choice of a cycling head unit.

Tulsa Tough

Tulsa Tough is this weekend and that’s where I’m at. Three days of racing and possibly 5 races for myself. It’s hot, it’s humid, let’s see how this goes.

I’m not necessarily here for results. That’s kind of the way this year is going for me. Playing it by ear. I’m still rehabilitating the knee/leg, don’t ever break your kneecap if you’re a cyclist (have I told you this before), so my strength is not quite all there. This is better than paying a physical therapist, if I watch how my body reacts, to get me stronger. Plus, would I would rather help pay a promoter and my fellow racers with my entry fee.  Also, this is  how I spend my vacations. Racing bikes and in being in the hurt locker is better than camping or Disneyland.

Last night was the first race. Really fast race, typical for the first day, for the 1,2′s. Really not a very exciting race from my perspective to tell. Mostly  3/4ths of the way in the back in a field of 100 guys. It was fairly easy to move up but I’m sure the guys at the front were suffering like dogs at the speeds we were going. It’s kind of interesting how, if there is successive corners that are a block long, if you position yourself on the inside of the turn most of the pack swings way out. If you trust your cornering skills you can carve a deeper path into the apex and pass a lot of guys in the straight. Then the next corner you’ll be on the outside and you can pass a lot of guys swinging back to the inside.  The next corner can get iffy because you can get pinched off by all the guys you just passed. Know body likes getting passed. This might not be possible at higher speeds such as the pros do but it was working like gang busters in the 1,2′s. Great race last night. Like I said, I’m still rehabilitating the leg so the speed and jumps out of corners will help with the process.

Today I’ll do the masters, at 3:50, then if I feel sufficient to not get dropped in the first lap of the 1,2′s, I’ll jump in that race at couple hours later also. This is some high quality racing and, yes for me, training/rehabilitating. Two hours in the hurt locker is just what the physical therapist ordered.

Power on.
