Proper Hydration for Exercise – Water or Sports Drinks

For those of you spending a lot of time indoors on the trainer remember to hydrate.  Here is a good general article on the subject. Even you outdoor exercisers need to keep up on the fluid intake. Water is so important. Not only do we bath in it but so are  the the cells in our body. I would include water as a nutrient that is how important it is.

Bookreview: “Challenge Race Across America”

Want to know how to survive a 4,800 km time trial? Climbing mountain passes over 3000m high, crossing desserts with temperatures above 40 degrees celcius in the shade – but where is shade when youre on the bike? Want to have fun while doing it, feel no pain, and finish with better performance data than when you started?

I sure do but my German is as rusty as an old car used to halt river bank erosion.

Learning Through Movement and Music: How Exercise Benefits the Brain

How Exercise Benefits the Brain

Jean Blaydes • Debby Mitchell

Why do we exercise? Some people exercise to lose weight. Others exercise to prevent disease. Some exercise just to feel better or to be healthy. One of the reasons we should exercise is for brain health.

Exercise benefits the brain even before it benefits the body. The brain does not store its own fuel, nor does it produce its own fuel. The brain relies on the body to get its needed fuel—oxygen and glucose—to the brain. The healthier and more physically fit the body is, the more efficiently the brain functions. This is because exercise changes the brain at a molecular

level by

growing new brain cells, a process called neurogenesis;

producing BDNF (brain-derived neurotropic factor), nicknamed the fertilizer for the brain;

strengthening secondary dendritic branching that increases memory retrieval; and

improving mood by balancing the neurotransmitters endorphins, dopamine, cortisol, and serotonin.

The brain is a complex structure. More parts of the brain “light up,” or are used, when a person is moving or physically active. See the figure, The Human Brain, for some basic information on the anatomy of the brain.

via Learning Through Movement and Music: How Exercise Benefits the Brain.

Really interesting. Something I could easily find myself  participating in from a research standpoint. Two of the most important qualities, I believe, to a productive society, learning and exercise.

More power to you.

Keep It Simple

I’ve always liked the idea, as in this article How to Fuel Your Fitness With Healthy Meals | Active.com, to keep eating simple. Sometimes we make things to complicated with recording all that we eat. Eating healthy is about baby steps. If it has a label on it glance at that label. Know what the nutrients are in approximate amounts. If you eat more fresh food pop on over to the internet, or buy a good nutrition book that lists popular foods and there ingredients, and glance at what you’re eating.

In the long run, you’ll become more familiar with what you’re eating. Health is not so much about the “now” but about life long decisions. It’s a lifestyle.
